5. York, United Kingdom

Recommended by Faith of Xyuandbeyond

York is said to be the rainiest place in the UK, but visiting in October is the perfect time with temperatures averaging around 12° to 15°C (60°F to 53°F).

York’s history spans thousands of years, from Viking finds at Jorvik to the medieval streets of The Shambles, William the Conqueror’s York Castle, Roman walls, and the stunning York Minster.

In the Shambles, stop by Margaret Clitherow’s house. Over 12 years of hiding Catholic priests during the Reformation, she was arrested and imprisoned for three years.

She refused to speak or plead at her trial and was condemned to be crushed to death under a heavy stone on the Ouse Bridge. She was later canonised as a saint by the Catholic Church.

York Minster is another highlight, home to the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world, including the beautiful rose window known as the Heart of Yorkshire. You can also climb the tower – 300 steps to the top – for truly breathtaking views.

October is the perfect time to visit with fewer tourists and great accommodation options like the historic Guy Fawkes Inn, where it is said the infamous architect of the Gunpowder Plot was born.

York’s many attractions can easily keep you busy for at least three days.

6. London, United Kingdom

Recommended by Sarah of Slow Travel

The downside of England being famous for its inclement weather is that everyone chooses to visit during the summer months, when longer days bring more sunshine and less rain.

This means, however, that the capital city is packed with tourists and queues for the main attractions are ridiculously long.

October is by far a better time to visit – it is still warm with a high of 16°C, hotel and flight prices drop about 20% and autumn colours fill the many central parks.

All the attractions stay open, and places like the Tower of London, the London Eye, and Kensington Palace have much shorter queues, so you can fit a lot more into your day.

If bad weather should happen, then it’s time to enjoy many of the capital’s indoor delights, such as the British Museum, the Science Museum, or the Natural History Museum.

In fact, London has over 25 free museums dedicated to history alone. October is also a time for many festivals, including Oktoberfest, Diwali, and the Film Festival.

Choose a central hotel, such as the Tower Hotel, and not only will everything be within easy reach, but you can watch the ebb and flow of life on the River Thames from the large picture windows, which also have beautiful views over the iconic Tower Bridge.

14. Malaga, Spain

Recommended by Cristina of My Little World of Travelling

Malaga is among the best European cities to visit in October because of its sunny weather, wide range of activities, and cheaper flight and accommodation rates compared to the peak season.

You can have different experiences depending on the time of the month they pick. For example, the first week of October in Malaga still feels like a summer holiday, allowing you to swim in the sea and enjoy the last days of water activities and beach clubs.

By the end of October, you can expect cooler temperatures and a different atmosphere since the days are shorter, too.

The average temperature in Malaga in October is 19°C, with a maximum of 24°C and a minimum of 15°C.

Regardless of the weather, Malaga offers a wide range of activities, from exploring historical buildings, museums, and art galleries to immersing yourself in the local food culture and hiking.

Some of the unmissable attractions that any Malaga itinerary should include are Gibralfaro Castle and Alcazaba fortress palace, Picasso Museum, and Malaga Cathedral.

While it is possible to visit Malaga’s main attractions in a day, three days are recommended to explore beyond these.

Staying central is the best option, especially for first-timers. Hotels like Hotel Soho Boutique Málaga and Room Mate Collection Valeria tick all the boxes.

15. Aix-en-Provence, France

Recommended by Inessa of Through a Travel Lens

Aix-en-Provence, in the heart of Southern France, is beautiful any month, but October hits a very sweet spot. The temperature simmers down to a comfortable 20 °C, and the flood of tourists subsides.

As the old and elegant plane trees on the city’s main street, Cours Mirabeau, slowly turn from green to gentle ochre and yellow, the city becomes perfect for strolls, lazy coffee mornings, and even lazier, indulgent evenings drinking wine and enjoying Provençal joie de vivre.

When visiting Aix-en-Provence in October, the best strategy is to book a hotel in the old town and explore the city on foot.

One excellent option is Aquabella Hôtel & Spa, conveniently located not far from Atelier Cézanne — the house where the famous French painter lived and worked, now open to visitors.

Among other things to do in Aix-en-Provence, it’s worth exploring its unique fountains, stopping by Église Saint-Jean-de-Malte, sampling local produce at the market near Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, walking around the Terrain des Peintres, and enjoying Provençal cuisine at one of the many great restaurants along Cours Mirabeau.

It’s worth spending at least two days in Aix, but three or more is even better, as it allows time for day trips to explore the charming villages and natural beauty of this part of Provence.

16. Tirana, Albania

Recommended by Suzanne of Albania Voyagers

Tirana is one of Europe’s most underrated cities. This compact and eclectic city is perfect for visiting in October when temperatures are lower, crowds are fewer, and hotels are more budget-friendly.

Albania was closed off from the world from 1942 to 1991 under a strict communist regime. This is the main reason Tirana is still off the main tourist track, but it’s gaining momentum as more people realize what an under-appreciated gem it is.

To be close to all the main sites, base yourself near Skanderbeg Square, the unofficial center of the city. A great choice in this area is the Xheko Imperial Hotel. From here, you can walk everywhere, and the neighborhood itself is lovely with parks and leafy boulevards.

European Cities in October

There may not be a long list of sites and things to do in Tirana, but there’s plenty to keep you busy for a few days.

Check out former communist sites like Bunk’Art 2, the Pyramid, or House of Leaves. Visit historic Et’hem Bey Mosque, experience the café culture, and eat traditional Albanian dishes. Enjoy Tirana’s vibrant street art and colourfully painted buildings.

In October, you can expect average temperatures between daytime highs of 22°C (72°F) and overnight lows of 13°C (55°F), perfect weather for exploring.

Plan to spend around 2–3 days in Tirana to see the main sights and still have enough time for a day trip to Kruja.

October in Lisbon is the perfect time! It’s less busy in the Portuguese capital, and the temperatures are much cooler.

You can expect an average temperature of 23°C (73°F), but it can drop as low as 15°C (59°F). There might be a drop of rain from time to time, but it rarely rains the whole day.

No matter the weather, there is always a lot to do in Lisbon. You can enjoy famous sights such as the Jerónimos Monastery, Lisbon Cathedral, or the Santa Justa Elevator. For some of the best panoramas, head up to Castle São Jorge.

If it rains in Lisbon, visit the Oceanarium, MAAT, or Gulbenkian Museum. You can also join a tile-painting workshop or a pastel de nata baking class.

Downtown Lisbon is the best place to stay as it’s centrally located near all the sights. Avenida da Liberdade is an amazing area to stay. Here, you’ll find hotels like Hotel Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisboa.
