Vegan in Sofia: 9 Great Restaurants & Cafés

While Bulgarian cuisine isn’t as meat-heavy as in some other Eastern European countries, I wouldn’t say it is particularly vegan-friendly either.

Many dishes, such as the beloved Shopska salad, Tarator, or Moussaka, include animal-derived ingredients like milk, eggs, and butter.

However, especially in the capital city of Sofia, it can be quite easy to find delicious plant-based food.

From cozy cafés with vegan pastries to modern restaurants offering creative twists on Bulgarian classics, the city has plenty of options. You’ll also find international spots serving everything from falafel and hummus to hearty veggie burgers.

In this post, I’m sharing nine great restaurants and cafés that make being vegan in Sofia truly enjoyable!

1. Izzy’s Coffee & Brunch

📍 Location: Knyagina Maria Luisa Blvd 17
💸 Budget: €€

Izzy’s Coffee & Brunch was the first place we went to after arriving in Sofia.

Our flight had been very early in the morning, so we didn’t get the chance to have a proper breakfast and decided to look for a spot to grab brunch. Since it was just a short walk from our hotel and offered vegan options, the choice was easy.

While it’s not a fully vegetarian or vegan spot, it does offer a few suitable options, such as avocado toast (be sure to ask for it vegan, otherwise it comes with butter instead of the traditional Bulgarian tomato spread) and oatmeal.

I ordered the vegan version of the avocado toast (highly recommended!), while my boyfriend went for the oatmeal.

When the weather is nice, you can sit outside, and on rainy days, there are a few tables inside.

For the toast, the oatmeal, and two coffees, we paid BGN 40, which is about €20.

The service is warm and friendly, the coffee is super good (with plant-based milk available), and the central location makes it a solid choice for vegans in Sofia.

2. SunMoon

📍 Location: 6th September St 39
💸 Budget: €€

SunMoon is a fully vegetarian restaurant and bakery in central Sofia, right at the “Small Five Corners” junction.

Opened in 2003, it’s now one of the most popular spots for locals and visitors to enjoy veggie and vegan dishes.

SunMoon has a varied menu, from vegan banitsa and pumpkin cream soup to stuffed aubergines and pizzas – you can even get almost any pizza with vegan cheese, like I did with the mushroom pizza.

The bakery is also a highlight, offering over 15 types of sourdough bread made from ancient grains and organic, locally sourced ingredients.

The place is cozy and rustic with lots of seating both inside and outside, so you can enjoy a meal in the vibrant city center no matter the weather.

Two pizzas and two lemonades came to a total of BGN 47, roughly €24.

3. Edgy Veggy

📍 Location: Knyaz Boris I St 18B
💸 Budget: €€

As a fully vegan restaurant, Edgy Veggy serves up just about everything you could dream of. It has a menu full of delicious plant-based options, from burgers and burritos to quesadillas, smoothies, and even gluten-free treats.

I went for the Garden Classic Burger, while my boyfriend chose the Tempeh Burrito – which I tried too and honestly liked even a bit more than my burger! Both were super tasty and packed with flavor tho.

We went on a Sunday evening, and the guy there told us that almost half the menu wasn’t available. So it might be better to go during the week around lunch.

It didn’t bother us much since we’re not super picky, but if you want a bigger selection, that’s something to keep in mind!

Otherwise, the portions are generous, the prices are ok (I think we paid around BGN 36), and the central location makes it super easy to get to.

4. Satsanga

📍 Location: Georgi Benkovski St 8
💸 Budget: €€

Satsanga is a cozy vegetarian and vegan restaurant in Sofia, serving a mix of Indian, Asian, and European-inspired dishes.

You pay by weight at the buffet, so you can pick exactly what you want from a wide variety of dishes like sweet potato curry, dahl, salads, and more.

While it’s not 100% vegan, most of the dishes are, and the staff will tell you which ones aren’t. When we went, only two dishes weren’t vegan, so there was plenty to choose from.

Besides the delicious and flavorful food, the interior feels warm and inviting, with blue-painted walls decorated with wooden mandalas, soft lighting, and plenty of comfortable seating.

For our two plates, a small bottle of water, and a Bulgarian beer, we paid BGN 44, which is about €23.

5. Raw & More

📍 Location: San Stefano St 9
💸 Budget: €€

Raw & More is a vegan/raw bakery located in the trendy Oborishte neighborhood. Everything here is homemade, raw, vegan, gluten-free, and sweetened with date syrup instead of refined sugar.

They offer a big variety of goodies: raw cakes, truffles, brownie-type bars, smoothie bowls, granola, and “chocolatey” treats like their “White Snickers” and White Grande.

They also serve coffee and other drinks, but since there’s no indoor seating, you either grab it to go or sit at the few outdoor tables when the weather’s nice.

We got a raw mango cake and a strawberry protein bar, and with two small coffees, the total was BGN 24, roughly €12.

The prices for the sweets are not the cheapest, but the quality – and the fact they make everything themselves (even the chocolate!) – makes it worth it.

6. Vita Rama

📍 Location: Doctor Peter Beron St 9
💸 Budget: €€

Vita Rama is a 100% vegan restaurant and holistic health center located in the heart of Sofia, near the National Palace of Culture.

It’s known as Bulgaria’s only plant-based establishment dedicated to high-carb, low-fat, and properly combined meals, emphasizing health and wellness.

The menu is full of nourishing options like seasonal soups, salads, grain-based bowls, and in-house baked gluten-free bread.

We tried the Buddha bowl, tacos with jackfruit and tofu, a lemonade, an alcohol-free beer, and a big bottle of water, and the total came to BGN 57, roughly €29.

While there are definitely cheaper restaurants available, Vita Rama stands out for its quality and healthy ingredients. So if you’re looking for a wholesome and filling vegan meal, it’s a great pick!

7. Ananda Bakery

📍 Location: Felix Kanitz St 14-16
💸 Budget:

Ananda Bakery is a cozy vegetarian bakery/café in Sofia with a full vegetarian menu for lunch, including several vegan options.

Most days, they offer multiple vegan & raw cake options (about half of their cakes are vegan) plus lots of healthy sweet treats.

We didn’t go there for lunch, though, but instead just for cakes and juices – I had a vegan blueberry cake and my boyfriend got a non-vegan strawberry cheesecake, plus two juices. Both were super yummy, and the slices were pretty big!

Ananda Bakery is a bit off-grid, especially if you’re staying around Serdika in the center, so you’ll need to take the metro or a taxi to get there – but it’s definitely worth the trip.

For the two cakes and two juices, we paid BGN 25, roughly €12.50.

8. Furna

📍 Location: Stefan Stambolov Blvd 3
💸 Budget:

Furna is a bakery/café with quite a few vegan-friendly options, especially their vegan banitsas – a traditional Bulgarian pastry usually filled with cheese or eggs, but here also available in tasty plant-based versions.

The menu clearly marks what’s vegan, and they serve really good coffee with plant-based milk options.

We were lucky that Furna was only about a 10-minute walk from our hotel, so on our first afternoon, we headed there hoping to try their vegan banitsas.

But when we arrived, almost everything was sold out, and there was just one sweet vegan banitsa left – I had been hoping to try a savory one.

So, we came back on Monday for a lunch snack, and this time they still had everything. I got the vegan savory banitsa with mushrooms, potatoes, onions, chili, and thyme, and it was delicious!

They also had two other vegan savory ones, and one sweet with pumpkin.

For two banitsas and two coffees, we paid BGN 26, around €13, making it a quick and super cheap lunch stop.

9. Loving Hut

📍 Location: Georgi S. Rakovski St 113
💸 Budget: €€

Last but not least, another great vegan restaurant in Sofia is Loving Hut. It’s near the National Opera House and part of the international Loving Hut chain, known for its healthy and delicious vegan food.

We went to Loving Hut for lunch at around 12:00 pm. They were just preparing some warm food (vegan moussaka), which wasn’t ready yet, and besides that, they only had cold slices of quiche and some sandwiches.

Since we wanted something warm, we decided to come back later. It’s not a cozy place to sit and enjoy a meal, as there’s almost no space to sit – it’s more for grabbing something to-go or a small sweet treat.

They don’t have a fixed menu, but cook whatever they make that day, so you might have limited choices – but it’s definitely worth checking out!
