Where to Stay in Sofia: The Best Areas & Hotels
One of the first things we noticed when exploring Sofia is that the city is quite large, and many of the main sights are spread out.
You can explore a lot on foot – especially in the city center – but sometimes taking the metro makes sense. That’s what we did, although if it was less than a 30‑minute walk, we usually just went on foot!
Picking the right area and hotel can make your stay in Sofia so much easier and more enjoyable, saving you time and letting you get the most out of your trip.
Some neighbourhoods are perfect if you want to be right in the action, surrounded by cafés, restaurants, and nightlife, while others are quieter and better for relaxing or exploring nature nearby.
In this post, I’ll break down the best areas to stay in Sofia, including what each is like, what you can do there, and some hotel recommendations so you can find the right base for you.

1. City Center (around Vitosha Boulevard)
Best for first-time visitors
The city center is the heart of Sofia and a great choice if it’s your first time in the city.
Staying here means you’re within walking distance of many of Sofia’s top sights, from the iconic Alexander Nevsky Cathedral to the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Serdica.
Vitosha Boulevard is the main pedestrian street and the perfect spot for a stroll. Lined with cafés, restaurants, and shops, it’s the city’s social hub and a great place to feel the local vibe.
Even at night, the area is lively but not overwhelming, so you can enjoy a relaxed evening out without venturing far.

It’s also popular with locals, so you’ll find plenty of authentic cafés, bakeries, and restaurants where you can soak up Sofia life without the tourist crowds.

Here, you can wander past elegant architecture, visit art galleries, or relax in one of the local cafés. The area still has easy access to many sights, but it feels more like a local neighborhood than a tourist hub.
