1. Graz, Austria

Graz is a wonderful destination year-round, but it becomes truly magical during Christmas.

The city’s festive atmosphere and beautiful decorations draw visitors from neighboring countries, making it a popular holiday spot.

Graz hosts several Christmas markets in various locations, with the one at the main square (“Hauptplatz”) being the most famous and iconic.

Situated right in front of the city hall, the market is impossible to miss with its towering decorated tree and charming carousel. From sweets and mulled wine to teddy bears and stunning decorations, you’ll find everything you could want there.

Far from the city center, on the famous “Schlossberg,” you’ll discover the “Aufsteirern” Christmas market. This unique market is set in the “Kasematten,” a former castle moat that serves as an open-air stage during the summer months.

However, each year during Christmas, this area transforms into a festively decorated living room, complete with numerous stalls offering delicious food, crafts, and, of course, mulled wine and other seasonal treats!

To reach this Christmas market you can either walk up the Schlossberg or take the Schlossbergbahn funicular.

This year’s markets will be open from November 22 until December 24 and are free to enter.

2. Vienna, Austria

Vienna is known for its grand choice of Christmas markets and the unparalleled atmosphere and aesthetics that the city creates for the annual Advent season.

Visitors can choose between 17 Christmas markets that are spread across the city. Most must-see Vienna Christmas markets are located in the historical old town, and a handful of them are within walking distance.

This includes the most iconic of them all, the spectacular Rathausplatz Christmas market, which is held on the vast town hall square. 

Mesmerizing light shows, an ice skating rink, music, good food, and, of course, Christmas stalls selling intriguing handmade Christmas items can be found here. 

Just a short walk away is the Altwiener Christkindlmarkt, which is the oldest Christmas market in Vienna. From there it’s merely a brief stroll to the city square and the Saint Stephan’s cathedral, where the city organizes a picturesque Christmas market with festive stalls. 

Most markets in Vienna operate already on the 8th or 15th of November and end on the 23rd or 24th afternoon.

There is no entrance fee to access any of the markets, which is, of course, another reason to visit the magical Vienna Christmas markets.

3. Hamburg, Germany

As the second largest city in Germany, Hamburg hosts 20+ Christmas markets, offering a themed Christmas market for everyone.

The Christmas markets in Hamburg are located all over the city, each neighborhood has one. However, the ones in the city center all have their own theme and are the most visited.

None of them have an entrance fee and you can reach most of the markets via public transport and on foot. 

Try some of the traditional German treats for sale, such as roasted chestnuts, pretzels, lebkuchen, glühwein, or hot chocolate with rum. They truly enhance the magical feeling of the Christmas markets. 

What’s so special about these Christmas markets? Well, they all have a unique theme.

The one in Sankt Pauli has a “red light” theme and is nicknamed Santa Pauli during this time of year. Am Rathaus has a historical market, Bergedorf has the oldest Christmas market in Hamburg and Seemannskirchen has a Scandinavian-themed market – to name just a couple of the different themes of the markets. 

Take an hour to two hours per Christmas market. You can see the ones in the city center in about a day. 

4. Berlin, Germany

Berlin has so many Christmas markets, that you could spend several days and only scratch the surface.

One market you should not miss on your Berlin Christmas market itinerary is the Charlottenburg Palace Christmas Market. 

The Charlottenburg Palace Christmas Market is set in front of a gorgeous palace, and that alone is enough to make it feel special.

At certain times of the day, carolers wander through the market singing. There is a good variety of food and drinks like mulled wine or even hot cocktails.

You can purchase handmade goods and other items, like hats and scarves, local honey, and more. If you’re traveling with kids, there are a few rides they’ll enjoy. And go to the viewing platform on top of the Hungarian food hut for nice views of the palace and market from above. 

This Christmas market is free to enter, and you could easily spend an hour or two minimum enjoying the festive atmosphere.

The palace address is Spandauer Damm 10-22, and you can get there by taking the M45 bus from the Zoologischer Garten train station and getting out at the Luisenplatz/Schloss Charlottenburg bus stop. 

5. Paris, France

The Tuileries Garden in Paris, France is one of the best Christmas markets to visit in Europe.

Set in the heart of the city near the iconic Louvre Museum and along the Rue de Rivoli, a portion of the Tuileries Garden transforms into a Christmas Market each year.

In 2024, the market will run from November 16, 2024, to January 1, 2025, and the entry is free.

At the Tuileries Christmas Market, you’ll find artisans selling handcrafted gifts and Christmas ornaments. You can also try classic European Christmas foods like mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, and melty raclette cheese, one of the top vegetarian foods to try in Paris. 

You can also ride the Ferris Wheel, which offers panoramic views of central Paris. Families will especially love the carousel, nutcracker-lined ice skating rink, and other Christmas-themed rides and carnival-style attractions. 

To avoid the busiest times, try to visit on weekdays or early mornings over the weekend. The market is easily accessible via the Tuileries Metro station on Line 1.

Dress warmly for this outdoor market and consider bringing cash for small purchases.

6. Strasbourg, France

Some of the most magical Christmas markets to visit in Europe this year are the ones in Strasbourg, France. Known as the “Capitale de Nöel”, Strasbourg is famous for its storybook towns and villages with colorful timberwood houses. 

The Christmas markets in Strasbourg are free to enter, and this year, they will take place from November 27 to December 27, 2024.

The leading areas for Christmas markets in Strasbourg are the Place de la Cathédrale de Strasbourg, Place du Château Strasbourg, Place Kléber, Place Broglie, Place Gutenberg, Place Saint Thomas, and Place Benjamin Zix.

When visiting the Christmas markets in Alsace, you must walk around the wooden chalets and enjoy a heartwarming vin chaud. It’s a spiced hot wine served in an adorable mug that you can take home as a souvenir or return to the stall where you purchased it for a partial refund. 

Make sure to savor tarte flambée, spätzle (a type of German pasta), crêpes, and decorative gingerbread cookies.

7. Colmar, France

Colmar, located in the Alsace region, is home to some of Europe’s most magical Christmas markets. 

From late November to the end of December, Colmar features six distinct Christmas markets scattered throughout the city (all within walking distance), each with its own charm.

Entrance to all the markets is free.

Place des Dominicains hosts the largest market, offering a wide variety of festive gifts and decorations. 

Old Customs House Square (Place de l’Ancienne Douane), centered around the Schwendi fountain, is another lively spot, while the Koïfhus Indoor Market inside the Old Customs House is dedicated to regional arts and crafts, showcasing the work of master glassmakers, painters, and woodcarvers.

The Petite Venice area is perfect for families, offering a market specifically for children with toy stalls and a carousel. 

Place Jeanne d’Arc is the go-to spot for food lovers, with a market focused on local gastronomy and Gourmet Market – Rue de la Montagne Verte is perfect for stocking up on Alsatian specialties.

Half-timbered houses and illuminated streets add to the overall festive atmosphere. As do the Ferris wheel on Rue des Chasseurs and festive events taking place at Place Rapp. 

8. Bellinzona, Switzerland

One of the best Christmas markets in Europe is hidden in the southern Swiss mountains.

Located in the capital of Ticino, Bellinzona hosts a Christmas market for two weeks each December that should be on your next winter Christmas market bucket list! 

The Bellinzona Christmas Market is unique to Switzerland, with over 200+ market stands selling local products, handcrafted designs, and very sweet gifts and decorations.

Some of these products include local wines, honey, and cheese, as well as clothing, home decorations, paintings and artwork, magnets, plants, and handcrafted items of all sorts. 

The market also includes those festive additional touches of live music and local Swiss delicates that you can eat. There is also a huge ice skating rink set up next to the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Castelgrande castle – which is also visitable during winter!

The market is held on only two Sundays before Christmas, open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, so you need to plan this in your diary to not miss out. The official market dates are usually announced after summer, perfect to start planning your winter vacation. 

As a visitor tip, make sure to bring some cash with you for some of the market stands. Not all of them accept cards.

Best Christmas Markets in Northern Europe

9. Riga, Latvia

Among Europe’s top Christmas markets is the one in Riga, the capital of Latvia, and one of Europe’s best places for solo travelers, couples, and families alike.

The market is located in Dome Square, the largest square in Riga’s Old Town.

Entry is free, and it runs from November 30, 2024, to January 2, 2025. Opening hours are Monday to Thursday from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm, Friday to Saturday from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm, and Sunday from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.

What makes this market special is the entertainment, including traditional Latvian singing and folk dancing on Sundays, DJ performances on Fridays, and choir performances on Saturdays.

Santa’s house is also open for visitors throughout the week.

While the entertainment is the highlight, there’s also plenty of great food and drink featuring popular Christmas traditions like gingerbread and mulled wine.

10. Helsinki, Finland

Finland has been classified as one of the happiest countries on earth many times in a row. One of the reasons is that they like to celebrate and bring joy to others. The Finnish people like the “pikkujoulu” (Little Christmas) parties.

Therefore, there is nothing better than buying souvenirs and decorations at a Christmas market to celebrate the Christmas spirit in the world’s happiest country.

Helsinki is known for having some of the best Christmas markets in Finland. Helsinki Christmas Market is the epitome of such places, being the oldest and most popular Christmas market in the capital.

Located in Senate Square, the  Christmas market has more than 100 stalls offering crafted gifts and Christmas ornaments.

It’s a great place for both adults and kids, with a merry-go-round that spins in the middle of the square. During Christmas, it is decorated with lights and colors to enhance the Christmas spirit.

Santa Claus also pays a visit and kids can stop by and take some pictures with him. 

The Helsinki Christmas market takes place from November 29 to December 22, so mark your calendars for an experience like no other.

To get to the market, just ask around about Senate Square or the iconic white Helsinki Cathedral, which overlooks the market.

11. Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn, Estonia’s capital city is one of the best places to experience Christmas in Estonia.

The Old Town of Tallinn is not only a UNESCO World Heritage site but is also where the yearly Christmas market is held. It was awarded “Best Christmas Market in Europe” in 2019 and is still considered one of Europe’s best.

The charming cobblestone streets and old-style buildings add to the fairytale-like atmosphere you will experience when visiting this gorgeous European city.

Located in Raekoja Plats, Tallinn’s town hall, you will find wooden stalls filled with Christmas decorations, food and sweets, handmade crafts, and more.

At the center of the market stands a beautifully decorated Christmas tree, a tradition that dates back to 1441, making it one of the oldest in Europe.

Enjoy traditional Estonian dishes like black pudding, sauerkraut, and gingerbread cookies, as well as Glogg, a traditional mulled wine flavored with local berries and fruit, to keep warm while walking around. Non-alcoholic versions of Glogg are offered as well.

This year’s market will be open from November 22, 2024, until December 27, 2024, and is free to enter.

12. Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is renowned for its enchanting Christmas markets, offering a magical holiday experience in the heart of Hungary.

The city’s most famous market is held at Vörösmarty Square, located in the city center.

This market features beautifully decorated wooden stalls offering handcrafted gifts, traditional Hungarian foods like chimney cakes (kürtőskalács), and a wide variety of mulled wines. It is also known for its live music and performances, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Another must-visit is the Christmas market in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica. This market is particularly famous for its stunning light show projected onto the basilica’s facade.

The market also offers an ice rink and a selection of gourmet foods and handmade gifts.

For a more local experience, the Óbuda Christmas market, located in the historic Óbuda district, provides a charming, less crowded alternative.

With its traditional crafts, local delicacies, and a warm, community feel, it’s a great place to experience authentic Hungarian holiday traditions.

13. Wrocław, Poland

The main Christmas Market in Wrocław is located in the Market Square, but you will also find Christmas decorations and stalls in several other places in the city.

There are many attractions at the market. Near the Old Town Hall, there is the Fairytale Forest, where you can ride Santa’s sleigh in the form of a small “rollercoaster,” and also see an installation where elves make and pack gifts.

A little further on is another carousel, as well as a large Santa’s sleigh and dwarves you can pose with.

At the Wrocław Christmas Market, you can also buy beautiful handicrafts such as handmade Christmas ornaments, cookies, and gingerbread houses.

Moreover, you can try Polish liqueurs, honey, and tea blends, as well as buy jewelry and the exquisite Bolesławiec pottery.

There are also unusual stalls – for example, the Traditional Blacksmith’s Workshop, where you can buy hand-forged products and see the process onsite.

At the market, you can enjoy mulled wine in a variety of flavors or opt for non-alcoholic drinks like tea, coffee, and hot chocolate. The food stalls offer traditional Polish dishes, along with snacks such as dumplings, langos, fries, and potato pancakes with cranberries.

There are also French motifs like edible chestnuts and crepes.

14. Prague, Czech Republic

Prague hosts numerous Christmas markets scattered throughout the city in December. Christmas in Prague is a fantastic time to be in the city, and the advent markets have much to do with it.

The Old Town Square Christmas Market is the city’s most beautiful Christmas market, and visiting it just once is never enough.

You’ll find Prague’s most beautiful Christmas Market in Staroměstské Náměstí (Old Town Square). The square is flanked by stunning Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architecture, including the Old Town Hall, Tyn Church, and St Nicholas Church.

The Christmas market is the proverbial winter wonderland everyone dreams of when planning a Christmas trip to Europe. It has lights, carols, a gigantic tree, and vendors selling yummy food and handicrafts.

Czech Christmas markets offer more food than handicrafts, and the Old Town Square Market is no different. Besides the famous trdelník (chimney cake), you can try crepes, hot nuts, langos, and churros to name just a few.

Hot svarak (mulled wine) and cold beer will keep the adults happy, while the little ones will love the hot chocolate. 

The market usually runs from the last weekend in November to the first weekend in January (30th November 2024 to 6th January 2025).

The market is open daily from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm. Entrance is free of charge.

16. Lisbon, Portugal

When you think of the best Christmas markets in Europe, Portugal might not be at the top of your list. But throughout the country, and especially in Lisbon, you can find many Christmas markets! 

Christmas in Lisbon is truly magical, but with a touch of sunshine on most days. 

One of the largest Christmas markets is Wonderland Lisboa at Parque Eduardo VII near Marques de Pombal.

The market is entirely free to visit and usually starts at the end of November and lasts until the first week of January. The park is decorated with Christmas trees, and children get to meet Santa.

There is also an ice skating rink and a Ferris wheel from which top you have a stunning view over Avenida da Liberdade and the rest of Lisbon!

Enjoy some mulled wine, hot chocolate, or chocolate churros, and take a look at all the market stalls with handicrafts and regional products.

16. Lagos, Portugal

The small city of Lagos in the south of Portugal has more than 300 sunny days per year and is the perfect spot. The festive season here is a fun affair on some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe.

The Lagos Christmas Village is a fantastic market in the city’s Praça do Infante located in the Lagos Old Town between December 1 and 24.

The market offers local and typical Christmas delicacies for sale and provides a range of attractions filled with the magic of Christmas. Get a real feeling of Christmas in Portugal by pairing some mulled wine with local pastries or chorizo.

Lagos is also a great place to visit with kids in the Algarve. The Christmas Village’s program for children is filled with entertainment including a craft market, mini Xmas train, concerts, storytelling sessions, Santa’s Grotto, an ice rink, and a ramp for sliding with tubes!

17. Madeira, Portugal

For those looking for one of Europe’s best Christmas markets, head to Madeira! In addition to its natural wonders, this Portuguese island becomes electric with holiday festivities during the winter. 

The main Christmas market is in the island’s capital, Funchal, located on the southern coast. Entry is free, and it’s open from the beginning of December through early January.

The market is on Avenida Arriaga, one of Funchal’s busiest streets. This optimal location also provides great access to restaurants and other shops.

Madeira’s Christmas market features numerous wooden stalls selling various goods and merchandise. Visitors can find food, drinks, handicrafts, and other products at the wooden stalls.

The island’s popular alcoholic drink, poncha and bolo do caco, a sweet potato flatbread, can also be found at the market.

The detailed decor makes the Christmas market even more magical. From the stalls to the trees, festive lights illuminate the Christmas spirit and make it an unforgettable experience.

18. Montepulciano, Italy

It is one of the perfect destinations to visit in Italy for Christmas. The surrounding streets are also adorned with lights, offering a magical backdrop of medieval architecture.

Visitors are welcome to explore the market without any entrance fee, allowing for a leisurely and immersive experience. 

The Montepulciano Christmas market is known for its artisanal goods, including handcrafted ornaments and locally made pottery, making it an ideal spot to pick up unique gifts and souvenirs.

The market also offers a delightful array of Tuscan delicacies, such as rich panettone alongside mulled wine to warm the soul.
