Best Time to Visit Greece – A Month-by-Month Guide
For me, Greece is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, with ancient ruins, sunny beaches, and amazing food. And yes, even being vegan in Greece is surprisingly easy!
I’ve been to Greece more times than I can count on one hand – from exploring cities like Thessaloniki to visiting both famous and hidden Greek islands like Patmos or Tinos.
From city trips in March to island adventures in September, after the summer crowds are gone, I’ve experienced Greece in different seasons.
But when is the best time to visit Greece? Well, it depends!
This simple guide will help you find the best time to visit – with tips for every month, what to expect in each season, and where to go depending on the time of year.

January to March
From January to March, Greece is quiet and the weather is chilly. In most areas, temperatures usually range between 5 and 15°C (41 to 59°F).
Athens is usually free of crowds if you visit during this time. The mountains and northern regions can get quite cold, with some areas even seeing snow.
These months are perfect if you want to explore cities without the crowds. You can visit famous Greek landmarks such as the Acropolis in Athens or the archaeological site of Delphi almost alone.
Museums are quiet, and flights and hotels are more affordable. While the islands aren’t ideal during this time, since many shops and restaurants close for the season, you can still enjoy cultural experiences and warm meals in cozy local tavernas.
TIP: Dress in layers and bring a raincoat. This is the rainy season in many parts of Greece, especially on the islands.
April
In April, Greece begins to come alive. Temperatures rise to between 13 and 20°C (55 to 68°F), and nature bursts into bloom. The countryside turns green, with flowers everywhere. The mild weather is perfect for outdoor activities.
April is ideal for exploring ancient ruins, hiking in the mountains, or enjoying scenic drives. The weather is comfortable, and the Easter holiday often brings lively local celebrations and delicious traditional foods.
TIP: Book early if your trip falls around Orthodox Easter. It’s one of the busiest travel times for locals.
May – One of The Best Months
May is one of my absolute favorite months to travel in Europe, and according to Greece Insiders – experts in tailored trips to Greece – it’s also often considered one of the best times to visit the country.
The weather is pleasantly warm, with temperatures between 18 and 25°C (64 to 77°F), and the sea starts to warm up enough for swimming.
It’s a perfect month for island hopping. You can explore islands like Crete, Naxos, and Paros without the summer crowds. Most hotels, restaurants, and beach bars are open for the season.
Plus, it’s a great time to enjoy walking tours, wander through charming villages, and join wine tastings or cooking classes.
TIP: Sunscreen is already necessary. Also, bring a light jacket for the evenings, especially in coastal areas.
June
June marks the start of full summer in Greece, with long sunny days and temperatures between 22 and 30°C (72 to 86°F). The sea is warm and perfect for swimming and water sports.
It’s a great time to explore both popular islands like Santorini and quieter ones like Tinos. Beaches are lively but not as crowded as in July or August.
You can also enjoy festivals, local music, and food events. Evening walks feel especially pleasant, and outdoor dining is at its best.
TIP: Start sightseeing early in the morning to avoid the stronger midday sun. Carry water and wear hats and sunglasses.
July & August – High Summer (& High Crowds)
July and August are the hottest and most popular months in Greece, with temperatures often soaring between 30 and 38°C (86 to 100°F). In some inland areas, it can feel even hotter.
This is prime time for beach lovers. The islands come alive with parties, events, and late-night fun. While Mykonos and Santorini are buzzing, you can still find peace on smaller islands like Koufonisia or Astypalea.
Although it’s not the best time to visit Greece for quiet sightseeing, it’s perfect if you love the sea, sunshine, and a lively atmosphere. Keep in mind that many Greeks take their holidays in August, especially around the 15th, so it’s wise to book early.
TIP: Stay hydrated and plan outdoor activities for early or late in the day. Book ferries and hotels well in advance.
September – The End of Summer
September is a fantastic month to travel to Greece. The weather stays warm, with temperatures between 24 and 30°C (75 to 86°F), and the sea is still perfect for swimming.
The crowds begin to thin out, especially after the first week. You can enjoy beaches, outdoor cafés, and cultural sites without the summer rush.
It’s an ideal time for a relaxing trip that blends history and leisure. Plus, many local festivals are still happening, giving you a real taste of authentic Greece.
TIP: Pack summer clothes, but bring something warmer for the evenings. September is especially great for couples and honeymooners.
October
October is cooler but still very pleasant. Temperatures usually range between 18 and 25°C (64 to 77°F), especially in southern Greece and on the islands. Early in the month, the sea is still warm enough for swimming.
It’s a great time to explore places like the Peloponnese, Delphi, and Meteora. The autumn colors in the mountains are stunning, making hiking and road trips perfect for this season.
Late in the month, the olive harvest begins, offering a glimpse into traditional farm life.
TIP: Rain becomes more likely, so bring a light waterproof jacket. Many beach bars and island resorts start closing by mid-month.
November & December
In November and December, temperatures drop to around 10 to 18°C (50 to 64°F), and rain becomes more frequent. Snow is possible in the mountainous areas.
While not ideal for beaches, this season is perfect for visiting Athens, Thessaloniki, and other big cities. You can explore museums, cafés, and shops at a relaxed pace. With fewer tourists around, prices are lower too.
In December, Christmas lights brighten the streets, and some villages host charming winter festivals.
TIP: Bring warm clothes and waterproof shoes. Use this time for cozy cultural experiences and city strolls.
Best Time to Visit Greece – Summary
If you enjoy beaches, swimming, and warm weather without the biggest crowds, the best times to visit Greece are May, early June, September, and early October.
For those who love hiking, spring flowers, or golden autumn landscapes, April, May, and October are perfect.
There’s not really a “worst” time to visit Greece — it all depends on what you’re looking for.
If you don’t like heat, high prices, or big crowds, then July and August might not be for you. Those months are very popular but can feel overwhelming, especially in the busiest tourist spots.
Honestly, Greece is amazing all year round — but in my opinion, the best time to visit is during spring or fall. You’ll enjoy great weather, fewer crowds, and better prices.
No matter if you’re after laid-back beach days, historic adventures, or strolling through quaint villages, you’ll find the ideal time to visit.
