Staying at Bergdorf Prechtlgut (Hotel Review)

When I think of chalets, I immediately picture cozy wooden cabins surrounded by snow, complete with every comfort and feeling like your own little home away from home. But there’s one thing I’ve always associated with them too: having to cater for yourself.

But if you’re looking to truly switch off and not have to worry about a thing, then chalets don’t exactly seem like the obvious choice, do they?

That may be true – but not at Bergdorf Prechtlgut. This charming chalet village in beautiful Wagrain, Salzburg, consists of eight individual chalets and offers exactly that: first-class service and the feeling of being taken care of from start to finish, alongside all the other luxurious amenities you could wish for.

And even though I usually associate chalets with winter getaways, Bergdorf Prechtlgut is just as impressive in summer. I had the chance to experience this myself during a weekend stay with my partner.

Arrival & First Impressions of Bergdorf Prechtlgut

Bergdorf Prechtlgut is located close to the center of Wagrain, right next to the valley station of Snow Space Salzburg – making it the perfect base for skiing in winter and exploring the mountains in summer.

You can hardly miss it as it is located right by the road. However, this does not take away from the peaceful and idyllic atmosphere at all, as we discovered during our stay.

The reason is that mainly the restaurant and reception area are visible from the road, while the individual chalets are tucked away behind them.

Restaurant & reception of Bergdorf Prechtlgut

When we arrived, we parked our car in front of the reception and went inside to check in. We were warmly welcomed by Carina, one of the owners, together with a member of the team.

They let us know which chalet we would be staying in so we could find our corresponding parking spot in the garage below the restaurant. Afterwards, we made our way to the chalet together.

One thing I immediately noticed and appreciated was that access to the chalet village is controlled by a gate that can only be opened with a room card. This creates an even more exclusive and private atmosphere.

Our chalet was the very last one at the top, so the walk there gave us a wonderful first impression of the entire place, which felt like its own little world.

Beautiful and cozy wooden chalets lined a winding uphill paved pathway, surrounded by plenty of greenery and flowers in between.

Inside Our Cozy & Spacious Chalet

Bergdorf Prechtlgut features a total of eight chalets across different categories, ranging from single-storey chalets and Alpine Luxury Lodges to an exclusive chalet with its own private pool.

We stayed in the two-storey Gipfelchalet – a fitting name, considering it was located at the very top of the chalet village. It belongs to the Premium Chalet category and offers 150 square metres of space with a total of three bedrooms.

Upon entering the chalet, we were welcomed by the spacious open-plan living and dining area. The first thing that caught my attention was the cozy fireplace in the center of the room. Right next to it was a comfortable sofa area with soft cushions and blankets, a TV, and even a shelf filled with books to read.

On the wooden table beside it, we found a selection of magazines as well as recommendations for things to explore nearby.

Since it was summer and quite warm during our stay, we didn’t light the fireplace. However, I can imagine how cozy it must feel in winter, when you can snuggle up here, enjoy the warm fire, and browse through one of the books.

Adjacent to the living area was a large wooden dining table as well as the incredibly well-equipped Swiss pine kitchen.

Besides a huge fridge and everything you could need for cooking, including a microwave, oven, stove, plates, pots, and more, it also featured a coffee machine as well as a wine and schnapps bar.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that it was probably better equipped than our own kitchen at home!

Going down the stairs, we reached the three bedrooms, two of which had their own en-suite bathrooms with walk-in rain showers, stone washbasins, and amenities from the luxurious brand Bogner.

But the absolute highlight of the lower floor was the private wellness area.

The wellness area was a spacious room dedicated entirely to relaxation. It featured a 3-in-1 sauna with a steam bath and infrared cabin, three loungers, a freestanding bathtub, as well as a shower and washbasin.

Outside, our private terrace offered even more space to unwind, with additional loungers and a hot tub.

Wellness area

We enjoyed spending our evenings in the wellness area the most. After our day trips, we usually relaxed with one or two sauna sessions before heading into the hot tub with a glass of sparkling wine.

Having such a beautiful and spacious wellness area completely to ourselves was truly something special. It’s hard to imagine having more privacy and peace than this.

The Unique Prechtlgut Experience

There are countless chalets to choose from, especially in Austria, where the offer is incredibly diverse. Many places already provide spacious, fully equipped chalets with all kinds of extras.

Yet, Bergdorf Prechtlgut manages to set itself apart through a few very special touches.

The Breakfast

A new day at Bergdorf Prechtlgut begins with a special breakfast experience. Instead of heading to a restaurant, your breakfast is delivered directly to your chalet.

The day before, you can create your perfect breakfast basket using a tablet and choose exactly what you would like to enjoy the next morning.

The menu offers a wide selection of bread and rolls, juices, spreads, cold cheese and meat platters, yogurts, fruit and vegetable plates, homemade smoothies, cereals, and even some vegan options.

However, it is best to let the team know before arrival, as they are happy to arrange additional items that are not listed on the menu, such as vegan cheese and vegan cold cuts.

Once you have selected everything you would like for breakfast, you can choose your preferred time, and the next morning all you have to do is sit down and enjoy it.

The team takes care of everything else, from preparing the table to clearing everything away afterwards.

I couldn’t imagine a more relaxed and effortless way to start the day!

The Restaurant

Something you don’t always find during a chalet stay is an on-site restaurant. So if you don’t feel like cooking (like us), you can either enjoy a delicious meal at Prechtlstadl or have it delivered directly to your chalet by ordering through the tablet.

On our first evening, we headed to the restaurant for dinner, while on the second evening, we enjoyed our meal on the terrace of our chalet.

The menu includes regional and traditional specialties as well as international and vegan dishes. On both evenings, I ordered the Classic Vital Bowl because I liked it so much. I also tried the coconut cream with passion fruit, which was absolutely heavenly!

Another great thing about the restaurant is that it is open seven days a week from lunchtime until the evening.

And even if the restaurant happens to be closed for some reason, the owners always try to have someone prepare meals for the guests staying at the chalets. This level of dedication and hospitality is something I haven’t experienced anywhere else!

The Natural Swimming Pond

Besides the private wellness areas in the chalets, there is another beautiful place to relax and unwind: the natural swimming pond. Surrounded by lush greenery and colourful flowers, it fits perfectly into the peaceful atmosphere of Bergdorf Prechtlgut.

After exploring the surrounding area, we spent half a day at the pond. With the beautiful summer weather, taking a refreshing dip and relaxing by the water was exactly what we needed.

I’m usually someone who finds the water in swimming pools rather cold, but the temperature of the natural swimming pond here was just perfect.

There are also comfortable sun loungers and parasols where you can unwind, read a book, or take an afternoon nap after a morning hike.

The Impeccable Service

At Bergdorf Prechtlgut, the service is at the heart of the entire experience — something you can truly feel throughout your stay.

You can be sure that there is always someone around who takes care of the little details and makes sure you feel completely looked after, while still allowing you to enjoy the privacy of your own chalet.

The aspects already mentioned, like the restaurant being open every day and having your breakfast delivered to the chalet, are just a few examples.

From booking yoga sessions and massages in the comfort of your own chalet to having groceries arranged before your arrival or ordering drinks and food while relaxing at the natural swimming pond – every detail is taken care of to make your stay as effortless as possible.

For me, it is exactly these little details that make it possible to truly relax, switch off, and leave everyday life behind.

Activities Near Bergdorf Prechtlgut

Although Wagrain is best known as a classic ski destination thanks to Snow Space Salzburg, the area around Bergdorf Prechtlgut also has plenty to offer during the summer months.

Just a 10-minute drive away, for example, lies the Jägersee, a beautiful lake surrounded by mountains and perfect for a leisurely walk or a canoe ride.

There is also a restaurant right by the lake where you can enjoy a drink or a meal while watching ducks and swans gliding across the water.

Jägersee

If you prefer something more active, you’ll find plenty of hiking trails around the Jägersee as well as directly from Bergdorf Prechtlgut. The region offers a total of 230 km of marked trails with routes suitable for different levels.

Golf lovers will also find several great golf courses in the surrounding area. And if you’re after something a little more fun and relaxed, I can highly recommend JO Adventure Minigolf in St. Johann – we had a great time there.

Among the most popular attractions nearby are the Lichtenstein Gorge in St. Johann, the largest ice cave in the world, and Burg Hohenwerfen, one of Austria’s most famous castles.

And if you’re still looking for more inspiration, you’ll find plenty of excursion tips on the small wooden table next to the sofa in your chalet.

Final Words

With so many beautiful chalets across Austria, finding the right one is not always easy.

However, Carina, Manuel, and the entire team at Bergdorf Prechtlgut create an experience that goes beyond a typical chalet stay and leaves a lasting impression.

Once you have stayed in one of the chalets and enjoyed the thoughtful service, the feeling of not having to worry about anything and simply being able to unwind, it is hard to find something comparable.

And honestly, you don’t have to — you simply come back. We definitely will, but next time in winter to enjoy the ski season. 😉
