One Day in Munich – The Perfect 24-Hour Itinerary

First of all, I’ve got some bad news for you: One day in Munich is definitely not enough. However, here’s the good news: You can still see and do a lot of things within 24 hours!

If you’re short of time as I was, it’s still easy to experience the true Bavarian feeling in the capital city of Germany’s largest federal state.

I spent only one entire day in Munich yet ticked off a decent amount of places from my list. And this even without rushing from one sight to another!

The following itinerary should help you to make the most out of your short time in Munich.

1. Brunch at Emmi’s Kitchen

Is there a better start to the day than having a delicious bowl of oatmeal or fluffy pancakes for breakfast? I doubt it. “Emmi’s Kitchen” is the perfect address to get enough energy for a full day of exploration.

It’s a fully vegan restaurant with a wide range of sweet and savory dishes such as oatmeal, pancakes, sandwiches, salads, etc.

Everything is homemade, fresh, and with lots of love prepared – you can taste that! Places like Emmi’s Kitchen make it very easy to be vegan in Munich.

Moreover, not only the food is mouthwatering, but with its convenient location, it’s also the perfect starting point for the itinerary.

2. Don’t Miss Marienplatz on One Day in Munich!

After fueling up on energy it’s time to start exploring the Bavarian capital.

What better place to go first than Marienplatz – the popular main square of Munich with the old and new city hall, dozens of shopping opportunities and restaurants nearby, and – most important – the famous Glockenspiel.

It’s always a very busy and lively place so be prepared to get soaked in by its vibrant energy!

The medieval Old City Hall is more than 600 years old and its tower offers a good view of the square.

Old City Hall

The New City Hall is an impressive piece of Gothic architecture and one of the most famous landmarks in Germany. Moreover, it is home to the popular Glockenspiel whose performance occurs at 11:00 am, 12:00 pm, and 5:00 pm.

During this time, motorized figures dance around the inside of the tower for about 10 minutes.

Also, if it’s your first time in the city, I recommend taking a Munich old town walking tour to see most of it in a short time.

Tours you might find interesting:

3. 360° View From St. Peter’s Church Tower

St. Peter’s Church is directly located next to the Marienplatz. It’s possible to climb the church tower to get a brilliant 360° view of Munich from above. The price to go up is €2 for students and €3 for adults.

However, before enjoying the view you need to climb more than 300 narrow stairs to reach the top of it. It’s a tough way up but the offered view makes it totally worth it!

Additionally, it’s a great possibility to spot as many sights of Munich in only one day hehe.

4. Fresh Fruits, Vegetables, And More at Viktualienmarkt

The next spot on our 24-hour itinerary is Viktualienmarkt. It’s a farmers market and is open from Monday – Saturday.

Besides local fruits, vegetables, meat, cheese, souvenirs, and decoration articles, you can also find exotic fruits, spices, flowers, and many more there.

It’s a nice place to grab a smoothie or simply taste a couple of things. Moreover, if you’re hungry it’s a good opportunity to have some lunch. What about a warming soup from the “Suppenküche”?

5. Hofbräuhaus – Bavarian Beer And Pretzel on One Day in Munich

Have you really been to Munich without drinking original Bavarian Beer and eating Pretzels? The only answer is No.

Of course, there’s no better place to do so than the world-famous Hofbräuhaus! Being more than 100 years old, the tavern is THE place of origin tradition and German hospitality.

It’s a place where the beer flows like water, a band plays traditional German folk music and people toast to life while having a great time. Therefore it’s a place you simply cannot miss on a day in Munich!

6. Strolling Through English Garden

To reach the English Garden it’s necessary to take the metro or a taxi as it’s a little bit outside the center.

With more than 900 acres, it’s one of the largest urban parks in the world and includes numerous walking paths, ponds, brooks, and (of course) countless beer gardens.

Therefore it’s a lovely place to take a stroll, go for a run, or simply relax on a bench and read a book.

7. Dinner at Prinz Myshkin to End One Day in Munich

After a long day full of adventures it’s time for some really tasty comfort food.

Munich has no lack of great restaurants and one I can highly recommend is “Prinz Myshkin” – a vegetarian/vegan restaurant offering dishes from all around the world.

Another reason why I liked it a lot is the relaxing and cool atmosphere which comes from the high ceiling as the building was a brewery many years ago.

If you have another morning in the city you should check out “SIGGIS”. It’s another perfect vegan brunch spot with the best turmeric latte and a real masterpiece of avocado toast! See for yourself:

One Day in Munich

Here ends my 24-hour itinerary of Munich and I really hope you liked it.

As I already mentioned it should be seen as a little help and you can definitely skip or add some other places you find more important to see. Munich is a big city with tons of sights so it’s really hard to fit everything in only one day.

But that also means you need to come back another time and discover more of it! Plus, maybe then you’ll have more time and can do some awesome day trips from Munich to places nearby.

There’s a picturesque castle not far from the city called “Neuschwanstein Castle” which looks like out of a fairy tale! If you go there, I recommend buying the Bayern Ticket to save money on transportation around Bavaria.

So the Glockenspiel, apart from the dancing, is similar to the changing of the guard in London?

    1. Hey Johnny!
I really enjoyed my time in Munich, it’s a nice city 🙂
The Glockenspiel is not really like the changing of the guards. It’s basically small, artificial figures moving inside the tower of the New City Hall while music is playing. Similar to the performance at the Astronomical Clock in Prague! ☺️
